Pops, bangs & launch

What actually makes the noise

Pops and bangs come from fuel burning late: deliberately retarded ignition and a small amount of extra fuel on overrun, so combustion finishes in the exhaust rather than in the cylinder. Done carefully it is theatre. Done crudely it cooks turbos, catalysts and valves.

Our approach is a controlled crackle map with defined limits — only on overrun, only above a set temperature, and only in a rev window that keeps heat where the components can take it. Hard-cut limiters, launch behaviour and exhaust valve control are calibrated the same way.

We are honest about the trade-off. On a track or show car it is great. On a daily driver with a factory catalyst and a long warranty ahead of it, we will tell you what it costs in component life.

KESS3 · K-TAGGenuine tools, genuine files

Road-use notice: crackle/pops maps, hard-cut limiters and exhaust valve changes are supplied for track and show use. They raise noise output beyond what is acceptable — and in some cases legal — on public roads, and they add heat load to the exhaust system.

At a glance

  • Controlled crackle map with rev and temperature windows
  • Hard-cut limiter for a sharp, defined rev ceiling
  • Launch behaviour on supported platforms
  • Exhaust valve control where the vehicle has one
  • Honest advice on heat and component life

The result

What you can have

Overrun crackle

Set at a level you choose, from subtle to loud.

Hard cut

A defined, aggressive rev ceiling instead of a soft fade.

Launch control

Clean, repeatable launches on supported gearboxes.

Valve control

Exhaust flap behaviour that matches how you actually drive.

How it works

Three steps. One visit.

  1. 1

Tell us the car and the use

Track, show or road — it changes what we recommend.

  2. 2

    We set the limits

Rev window, temperature gate, and how loud you actually want it.

  3. 3

    Flashed and checked

Written into the same file as your engine tune.

Good to know

Questions we hear every week.

Will pops and bangs damage my car?

Badly written maps can — that is why ours are gated by rev range and temperature, and why we will not put an aggressive crackle on a car that has to live with a factory catalyst and daily miles.

Is it legal on the road?

Noise limits apply to road vehicles, and an excessively loud car attracts attention and can fail scrutiny. We supply these maps for track and show use and say so up front.

Can it be turned back off?

Yes. Your original calibration is saved and the car can be returned to standard at any time.

Want your car to sound like it means it?

Tell us the car and how it is used — we will tell you honestly what suits it.
