Gearbox & DSG tuning

Why the gearbox needs its own map

Modern automatics have their own control unit with its own factory compromises: lazy part-throttle shifts, early upshifts for emissions cycles, and torque limits set for the least mechanically sympathetic driver the manufacturer could imagine.

Gearbox tuning rewrites that calibration — shift speed, shift points, clutch clamping pressure, launch behaviour and the torque ceiling the transmission will accept. On a remapped car this last point matters most: a tuned engine pushing against an untouched gearbox torque limiter is leaving its gains on the table, and on twin-clutch boxes it can mean slip.

That's why we map transmission and engine as one package where the platform supports it. The result is a car that shifts the way the engine now deserves — crisp when you push, invisible when you commute.

At a glance

  • Faster, crisper shifts under load
  • Torque limits raised to match the engine tune
  • Shift points that hold the power band
  • Launch behaviour cleaned up where supported
  • Comfort in normal driving untouched

The result

What changes

Shift speed

Gear changes measured in less time and less drama — the box stops interrupting the drive.

Torque ceiling

The transmission accepts what the tuned engine now makes, instead of clamping it.

Manual mode that obeys

Hold a gear to the limiter without the box overruling you.

Kickdown discipline

Downshift logic that reacts to your foot, not the emissions cycle.

How it works

Three steps. One visit.

  1. 1

    Tell us the platform

DSG, S tronic, ZF 8HP and more — we confirm what your gearbox supports when you book.

  2. 2

    Book your slot

Often flashed in the same visit as the engine remap.

  3. 3

    Drive it out

Shift calibration flashed, checked and road-tested with the engine file.

Good to know

Questions we hear every week.

Which gearboxes can be tuned?

The common flashable platforms include VAG DSG / S tronic (DQ200, DQ250, DQ381, DQ500), ZF 8HP automatics used by BMW and others, and a growing list of conventional autos. Tell us your car when booking and we'll confirm before you commit.

Do I need gearbox tuning with a Stage 1 remap?

Not always. Many Stage 1 cars stay under the factory torque ceiling. It becomes important on stronger tunes and on twin-clutch cars where the factory limiter clips the new torque — we'll tell you honestly which side your car falls on.

Will it make normal driving jerky?

No. The comfort maps for gentle driving stay civil; the aggression is added where you ask for it — full throttle, sport mode, manual mode.

Is it reversible?

Yes — like the engine file, the original transmission calibration is backed up first and can be restored.

Make the gearbox keep up.

Check your car on the booking page — engine and gearbox can usually be mapped in the same visit.
